Zanbagh wins first race for new trainer

Saturday 14 November 2015, 6:21pm

Zanbagh has brought back memories of her three-year-old days with a Rosehill victory that surprised even her trainer.

John Thompson took over the mare's training a couple of months ago after she returned to NSW from Patrick Payne at Ballarat.

Owners Sandy and Kathy Tait sent Zanbagh to Payne in Victoria after the death last year of trainer Guy Walter who guided her early career.

Although pleased with her progress since she joined the stable, Thompson thought based on her previous form, Zanbagh would need further than the 1350 metres of Saturday's November Handicap.

"I've kept her pretty fresh and she has thrived in the stable," Thompson said.

"She's eating well which is always a big help. And she is one of the most clean-winded horses I've had which means she doesn't need to be worked too hard.

"I think the wet track helped her today and she has plenty of improvement."

Some punters also thought she would do well in the wet with the mare backed from $41 to $21.

Kathy O'Hara produced Zanbagh from near last and the five-year-old ran down the leaders to beat Frespanol,. the $2.70 favourite by a half length.

Zanbagh races in the Tait family's red and white colours worn by many Walter-trained horses including 13-time Group One winner Tie The Knot.

Her win brought up a winning double for O'Hara who steered the Robert Price-trained Dashie De Luxe to win the Highway Handicap for country horses.

Zanbagh ran second to Kirramosa in the 2013 VRC Oaks and was runner-up again in the Australian Oaks the following autumn won by Rising Romance.
