Indarra on the board with Sandown victory

Saturday 14 November 2015, 2:30pm

Robert Smerdon has long held high expectations for Indarra who broke through for her maiden win at Sandown.

And the trainer has bigger plans for the filly next campaign after she scored a determined victory in the Listed City Of Dandenong Stakes on Saturday.

The daughter of Stravinsky will now head to the paddock before having an Oaks campaign in the autumn with Smerdon's preference being Adelaide rather than Sydney.

Ridden by Mark Zahra, having his first day back following a 22-meeting suspension, Indarra was backed from $6 into $4.80 favouritism before scoring a long neck win from Mihalic ($17) with Antelucan ($16) a short half-head away third.

Smerdon thought the better fillies races during the spring were within reach of Indarra, however an abscess put her program behind schedule.

"Here we are at the end of the spring having had only a couple of runs," Smerdon said.

"She'll go to the paddock now, so it might be a blessing.

"In the long-term we'll look to the autumn and we're pretty confident we can stretch her out to 2000 metres."

Zahra said Indarra would have no problems getting a distance and says 2400m wouldn't be beyond her.
