Dandino out of Zipping Classic with injury

Friday 13 November 2015, 4:25pm

A suspensory injury has forced much-travelled stayer Dandino out of the Zipping Classic and into likely retirement.

The winner of last week's Queen's Cup at Flemington, Dandino was favourite for Saturday's Zipping Classic at Sandown before his scratching on Friday.

Managing part-owner Darren Dance said trainer Darren Weir noticed a change in the suspensory ligament of Dandino's off-foreleg.

It was the same injury Dandino suffered last year that forced him to miss the Caulfield Cup.

"I suspect when he ducked in the other day he was telling us something," Dance said.

"The last thing I wanted to see was him breaking down in a race.

"He's been a great horse, taken us all over the world and given us good fun so it's good that he goes to the paddock not broken down."

Dance said he doubted Dandino would again be seen on a racetrack.

"I think we'll find him a good home and hopefully a career at stud somewhere," he said.

Dandino ran second in the 2013 Caulfield Cup before running fifth in that year's Melbourne Cup for Marco Botti and returned in 2-14 with that trainer for another tilt at the Cups.

After going amiss on Caulfield Cup eve last year, Dandino was transferred to Weir who produced the nine-year-old to finish fourth in the Group One Turnbull Stakes before his second to Almoonqith in the Geelong Cup last month.

Dandino won nine of his 37 starts and almost $2 million prize money.
