Epsom prize money doubles to $1 million

Wednesday 15 July 2015, 2:13pm

The Sydney spring carnival has a new $1 million race with prize money for the Group One Epsom Handicap doubled from this year.

The boost was among a raft of stakes money increases announced by the Australian Turf Club on Wednesday with the Metropolitan also receiving a significant injection of $350,000, taking its total purse to $750,000.

Darren Pearce, CEO of the ATC, said the club's improving financial position made the prize money increases possible and that re-establishing the Epsom as one of the feature mile races of the spring was a priority.

"The Star Epsom Handicap is again Australia's premier spring mile race and we hope it can attract The Star Doncaster winners and runners, and those heading to races such as the Cox Plate, as in previous years with champions such as Super Impose, Filante and Racing To Win," Pearce said.

All up the ATC will funnel an extra $2.26 million into feature races during Sydney's spring and summer carnivals, including the Spring Champion Stakes and Flight Stakes, which will both be worth $500,000 from this year.

The Flight Stakes will also carry a ballot exemption for the 2016 Doncaster Mile.

The winners of the Epsom and Metropolitan will qualify for the biggest race during the 2016 version of The Championships, the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes, while the Roman Consul and Premiere Stakes winners will earn an automatic entry into the TJ Smith.

The ATC has also announced a 10 per cent reduction in training fees from the start of the new season on August 1.
