Black Jag cleans up in Flemington victory

Saturday 13 June 2015, 3:05pm

Black Jag has been likened to an off-season version of popular Tasmanian galloper The Cleaner after an all-the-way win at Flemington.

In much the same way weight-for-age winner The Cleaner likes to roll along and break his opponent's hearts, Black Jag also prefers to build the tempo from the front of the field.

It's why trainer Chris Waller decided to keep jockey Noel Callow for the ride in a heat of the Banjo Paterson Series.

Callow had his first ride on Black Jag at Moonee Valley on May 23 when second to Kareeming, beaten in a photo.

"Chris described him to me as the poor man's The Cleaner and he thought I might be the right man for the job," Callow said.

Black Jag ($6.50) fought on bravely to beat the favourite Lady Cumquat ($4) by a length with Kareeming ($5) a length away third.

"He doesn't look like he's travelling very well but he keeps that same gallop up," Callow said.

A son of Excites, Black Jag landed his ninth win from 64 starts and took his prize money to more than $520,000 with Saturday's win.
