Sargent in charge of Segenhoe string

Thursday 11 June 2015, 4:53pm

Everybody needs good neighbours, just ask John Sargent.

The kiwi horseman recently had his stable numbers swell by a dozen horses when Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia boss Kevin Maloney anointed him the new trainer of the group's Randwick string, replacing David Vandyke.

The pairing is a logical fit - they are Randwick neighbours.

"I'm right next door to the stables and I train a few of Kevin Maloney's stayers so I had a relationship there," Sargent said.

"I think David Vandyke decided it was too much travelling moving from Warwick Farm and it was easier to stay there, so they (Segenhoe) were looking for someone else."

Sargent will saddle up the first of the new Segenhoe team at Rosehill on Saturday.

Aussies Love Sport, a last-start winner, will line up in the TAB Place Multi Handicap while Breakfast In Bed resumes in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap.

The duo are topweights in their respective races and Sargent has booked apprentice Winona Costin to ease their loads.

The trainer admitted he was still getting to know his new additions but said Aussies Love Sport and Breakfast In Bed earned Rosehill starts with good pieces of trackwork on Tuesday.

"And the others are all young two-year-olds so it's just going to take a bit of time to get to know them.

"But that's probably better than walking into a stable that are all racing because you don't know where they are at," he said.

Sargent will also start Mr One Eleven in the Schweppes Handicap at Rosehill.
