Hot Snitzel scores upset win in G1 BTC Cup

Saturday 9 May 2015, 4:22pm

Hot Snitzel completed an unforgettable day for top jockey Blake Shinn when he scored a boilover win in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben.

Hot Snitzel's upset made it five wins for the day for Shinn and added to his dominant victory aboard Pornichet one race earlier in the Group One Doomben Cup.

Shinn gave Hot Snitzel ($26) the run of the race and the sprinter held off a late challenge from Knoydart ($17) to win by three quarters of a length.

"I was so impressed by this horse's enthusiasm especially for a rising seven-year-old," Shinn said.

Shinn scored earlier for Peter and Paul Snowden aboard I've Got The Looks in the Juanmo Stakes and Charlie Boy in the BRC Sprint.

The Snowden stable took over the training of Hot Snitzel and Charlie Boy after Triple Crown Syndications parted ways with Gerald Ryan.

"He's a horse who can be a bit quirky but the key with him is to keep him fresh and give him time between races," Peter Snowden said.

The $2 million Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) on June 6 is now high on the agenda for Hot Snitzel in the wake of Saturday's victory.

"Our original plan was this race and the QTC Cup but the way he won today we'll probably head towards the Stradbroke," Snowden said.

James McDonald said Knoydart was on target for the Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke.

"The horse is going terrific and I can't wait until he steps up to the 1350 metres for his next two runs," he said.

The fairytale Group One victory didn't eventuate for Our Boy Malachi who led and held on bravely for third.

"It was a very good run but I think the hard run first-up in the wet at Randwick might've taken a bit of a toll on him today," jockey Tommy Berry said.

Srikandi ($3.40) ruined her chances when she bungled the start before finishing eighth.
