Charlie Boy on Stradbroke Handicap trail

Saturday 9 May 2015, 3:54pm

Charlie Boy cemented a start in the $2 million Stradbroke Handicap after ending a losing streak in the Group Three BRC Sprint at Doomben on Saturday.

Jockey Blake Shinn brought Charlie Boy, the $3.70 favourite, with a well-timed finish to defeat Rock Sturdy ($9) by a half length with Nite Rocker ($10) three quarters of a length away third.

Trainer Peter Snowden said Charlie Boy's main carnival goal is the Stradbroke at Doomben on June 6.

"The Doomben 10,000 is the logical next run for him in a fortnight but if I feel he needs a softer option there's the QTC Cup a week before the Stradbroke," Snowden said.

In typically humble fashion, Snowden gave Charlie Boy's former trainer Gerald Ryan much of the credit for the win.

"I was lucky to get him at the right time and he was presented to me in very good order so full credit to Gerald," Snowden said.

Before Saturday's win Charlie Boy hadn't won a race since the Danehill Stakes at Flemington in September 2013.

"Gelding the horse before this campaign has been the makings of him and there's plenty of improvement still to come," Snowden said.

"Looking at him in the enclosure before the race I thought he was too soft but he's definitely on an upward spiral."

Shinn echoed Snowden's assessment of Charlie Boy and predicts the four-year-old will be at his peak in the Stradbroke.

It was the third leg of a winning treble for Shinn after earlier wins aboard Sadler's Lake in the Rough Habit Plate for Chris Waller and and I've Got The Looks in the Juanmo Stakes, also for Snowden.

Hugh Bowman was pleased with Rock Sturdy's effort but said the four-year-old found Charlie Boy too strong in the final 100 metres.
