Chautauqua primed for Group 1 All Aged bid

Monday 13 April 2015, 4:53pm

The Hawkes stable has no concern about Chautauqua coping with a step up to 1400m in the All Aged Stakes.

The gelding has had two previous attempts at 1400m, winning the Hawkesbury Guineas before running fifth in the Scone Guineas last May.

However the four-year-old has stepped up a level since, winning four of his next six starts, over 1100m and 1200m, with his two defeats being second placings in the Darley Classic and Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said Chautauqua had come through his TJ Smith Stakes victory, his first at Group One level, in good order and the stable was looking forward to the challenge in the All Aged Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

"It's going to be a cracking race," Hawkes told Melbourne radio station RSN.

"The way the race was run last time he probably ran a genuine 1300 (metres) and maybe a touch further.

"He loves winding up but at the 1400 (metres) he might be a touch closer in the run.

"You just have to have him where he's happy."

Tommy Berry, who won the TJ Smith at his first ride on the gelding, has the mount again on Saturday.

Hawkes said Chautauqua is likely to head for a spell after the All Aged Stakes and target the Melbourne spring carnival with the Hong Kong international meeting in December also a possibility.
