Rudy to be aimed at Brisbane carnival

Sunday 12 April 2015, 2:03pm

Rudy could make a surprise attack on the Brisbane carnival weight-for-age middle distance double.

The gelding was expected to have a break after his solid fourth in the Group One Doncaster Mile at Randwick last Monday.

Trainer Helen Page sent Rudy to spelling property Kolora Lodge, near the Gold Coast, two days later.

But after talking with Tom Clarke, the senior partner in the ownership of Rudy, Page is considering setting Rudy for the Group Two Hollindale Stakes on April 25 and the Group One Doomben Cup on May 9.

Page said Rudy would be brought back to her Gold Coast stable on Monday with an eye to continuing his campaign.

"Tom and his wife Gilda are off for a holiday but he was keen to try Rudy over a middle distance in top company," Page said.

"We feel Rudy is racing like he would like the 1800 to 2000 metre distance range.

"In a normal year we might have looked at the Group One Stradbroke which is usually run over 1400 metres at Eagle Farm."

"But this year it is 1350 around Doomben and that won't suit him."

She said Rudy had shown he was capable of performing against the best horses and weight-for-age would not worry him.

"But in the end we won't take any risks with the horse," she said.

"If he looks ready to continue on with his campaign we will go ahead. But if he is showing any signs of being ready for a spell that is where he is going," she said.

Rudy has had four attempts at 1800m or further and has recorded one placing, a third in the Grand Prix at Doomben last year.

"He is a much stronger horse now," Page said.
