Avoid Lightning earns praise from Bridge

Saturday 11 April 2015, 5:43pm

Les Bridge has declared Avoid Lightning the best wet-track specialist he has trained after the mare wore down Victorian Griante to win the final race of The Championships.

The six-year-old's Sapphire Stakes victory on Saturday took her record to seven wins in nine starts on rain-affected ground.

"I've had a lot of good mares and I've been a trainer for 50 years, and she's the best wet tracker," Bridge said.

"I will probably take her up to Brisbane now for that race (Tatt's Tiara) she was beaten in last year."

Starting a $3.40 favourite, Avoid Lightning raced outside the speed and was under a strong hold from jockey Tim Clark at the top of the straight.

Griante ($7) took an inside run to hit the front but when Clark let Avoid Lightning go, the mare responded and pegged Steven Arnold's mount back to score by a half-length.

Fine Bubbles ($51) was another 1-1/2 lengths away at third.
