Gollan gets his Saturday metro quartet

Saturday 11 April 2015, 5:30pm

Underrated gelding Rocket To Glory has given trainer Tony Gollan his first Saturday metropolitan quartet thanks to a display of blistering speed in the Listed Chief De Beers Handicap.

Gollan went into the Doomben meeting with 11 runners and came away with four winners: Rocket To Glory ($16), Gundy Spirit ($3.70), Sheiswhatsheis ($2.50) and Secret Saga ($3.30).

He has trained 63 metropolitan winners this season, and is 15 off the record of 78 held by Bruce McLachlan in 1987-88.

Rocket To Glory had too much pace for a smart field of sprinters, holding off the handy Cape Kidnappers ($6) in a battle over the final 200m of the 1110m race.

"I have had four winners at a metropolitan meeting before, but only at the midweeks. In fact, I had never had a treble in town on a Saturday before," Gollan said.

He said Rocket To Glory was a much-underrated gelding that could produce very fast times.

"We were toying with running him in the Listed Weetwood Handicap, but he will now go to the Group Two Victory Stakes at the Gold Coast in a fortnight," Gollan said.

Rocket To Glory has won 14 races and $811,000 in prizemoney.

Gundy Spirit has earned a start in the Listed Prime Minister's Cup at the Gold Coast in a fortnight after his win in the Garrards Open (1350m).

"He is a smart horse but he needs dry tracks. We are keen to get him into some of the winter carnival sprints but the weather will play a major part," Gollan said.

Sheiswhatsheis is also on a winter trail after leading all the way to win the Calibre Consulting Plate (1630m).

The filly is bred to get at least 2000m, and Gollan is looking for stakes races at that distance.

Jockey Tegan Harrison dropped her whip on Sheiswhatsheis and urged her to the line using hands and heels.

"I was roaring at her to keep going and she responded well," Harrison said.

Harrison had a treble winning on Secret Saga, Sheiswhatsheis and Rocket To Glory.

Jockey Tim Bell also landed a treble with Sir Moments ($5) and Beau Jet ($11) for trainer Steve O'Dea, and Gundy Spirit ($3.70) for Gollan.

Beau Jet stormed home to win the Hopgoodganim Three-Years-Old Plate (1110m) and ensure he will progress to the Group Three Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) in a fortnight.
