Serenade after black-type win at Randwick

Friday 10 April 2015, 6:20pm

Mike Moroney was far from surprised when Serenade ran well in the Golden Slipper and hopes the filly can land her first Group win in the Percy Sykes Stakes.

Serenade lines up in Saturday's Group Three race for two-year-old fillies at Randwick as one of the leading chances, three weeks after a close seventh as an outsider in the Golden Slipper.

"We thought if she made the Slipper she would be pretty hard to beat," Moroney said.

Serenade is one of three Slipper runners in the Percy Sykes with third placegetter Lake Geneva favourite to win for the first time.

Lake Geneva, who finished a half length in front of Serenade in the Slipper, is at $2.60 with Serenade at $5.

Ottoman is the other Slipper runner, having finished ninth behind Vancouver.

Moroney's concern about Saturday is that Serenade has been in work a long time and backed up from her Reisling Stakes fourth placing to run in the Slipper.

"She's shown signs that she's fine, I haven't seen any signs to say that she's tired but you just never know," he said.

"It took a good week to get over it but we did back her up so that's what you'd expect with a young horse."
