Plucky Belle gives Linda Meech first G1

Saturday 14 March 2015, 5:45pm

A first Group One win for Linda Meech, a big couple of days for the Esplin family and a shattering experience for trainer John Thompson.

The Coolmore Classic at Rosehill had it all and more when Plucky Belle poked her head through to deny odds-on favourite First Seal.

Meech is a stalwart of the Peter Moody stable which produced Plucky Belle ($16) at her best to win for Sydney's Esplin family a day after their filly Slightly Sweet won the Group Three Keith Nolan Classic at Kembla Grange.

Thompson, the trainer of First Seal was downcast as he waited in hope for the photo-finish to go up on the big screen.

Meech was also unsure and thought she had run second.

"I was concentrating and had my head down so I wasn't sure," Meech said.

"She is a little star. Everywhere I put her, she went there.

"I don't think it will sink in for a little while.

"Peter said it was about time I ride a Group One winner. He puts so much faith in me whether it's a Murtoa maiden or a Group One."

While Plucky Belle took the runs on the inside of the track, First Seal, who carried 2.5kg more, was three wide throughout the race.

"I got forced wider from the 500 metres, but I was always travelling like the winner," jockey Blake Shinn said.

"She hit the front at the 200, but the winner had the softer run and with the weight advantage, it just got the bob in."

Diamond Drille ($26) ran a gallant third, just a short head from the runner-up.

Hamish Esplin, the son of former AJC committee member and Racing NSW director, the late Phillip Esplin, said he could not have dreamed of a bigger two days.

"We had a double once at a Saturday meeting and thought that was the greatest thing ever," Esplin said.

"I was thinking about Dad on the way to Kembla yesterday and was thrilled when Slightly Sweet won but this is something else."

The Melbourne-based Moody's Sydney stable is run by Clare Cunningham who was thrilled with the win.

"It's a pleasure to have her in the stable and I'm absolutely stoked," she said.

"It was a great ride by Linda and great that it happened on ladies day. She really deserves this win."
