Voodoo Lad set for Tamworth Country heat

Wednesday 11 March 2015, 3:04pm

Scone trainer Rodney Northam says Voodoo Lad is on target to race well in the $100,000 Country Championship qualifier at Tamworth.

In what is shaping as a super race and the strongest field yet assembled in the Country Championship series, Voodoo Lad is likely to go to the post as favourite on Thursday despite being runner-up at his last two starts.

Northam, a fine horseman, says he has the three-year-old ready to peak at the right moment.

"We've aimed towards this race for months. Fitness-wise it won't be an issue," Northam said.

"He's been a bit behind the eight-ball but he's worked along nicely towards the race."

Voodoo Lad showed ability right from day one and the son of I Am Invincible has never finished worse than second in six starts, recording three wins.

He won the Scone Challenge last year as a two-year-old, underpinning his ability and was spelled to get ready for the Championships.

He resumed from a 210-day break to record a win over 1100m at Scone on December 12 then had another 55-day break.

Diving through late after gaining a split at the 200m, Voodoo Lad was beaten a long head by Eye Striker over 1200m at Wyong on February 2.

The gelding then contested the Championship Prelude over 1300m at Scone on February 23.

After leading and pulling in the early stages he was claimed over the latter stages by Championship rival, Artlee, going under by a length.

Northam will also saddle up Husswick in the race.
