Leading Sydney stables target Black Opal

Thursday 5 March 2015, 5:04pm

Nick Olive will bid to end the recent dominance of Sydney trainers in the Black Opal Stakes when he saddles-up Single Gaze in Sunday's $275,000 race in Canberra.

The local filly was among 13 acceptors for the Group Three feature, six of them from major Sydney stables.

Godolphin has paid up for two runners, filly Antelucan who has opened favourite and two-time city placegetter Chamarel

Gai Waterhouse will try to win the race for the first time with Clash Of Clans while Hawkes Racing (Surf Seeker), Clarry Conners (Dorf Star) and Gary Moore (Takedown) will also be represented.

Single Gaze looms as the best of the locally-trained runners having placed in the Magic Millions Classics at the Gold Coast and Wyong and she is second pick in early markets.

Consistent performer Burbero heads betting on the Listed Canberra Cup (2000m) which has attracted 12 runners including last-start Flemington winner Sir John Hawkwood for Peter Moody.

Gai Waterhouse holds a dual hand in the race with Queenstown and Laidback Larry.

A field of 13 will line up in the Canberra Guineas headed by the David Payne-trained Bold Circle while impressive last-start winner Darciwood is among a 12-horse field for the National Sprint.
