Thee Auld Floozie earns NZ Oaks start

Wednesday 4 March 2015, 3:31pm

Trainer Stephen Marsh always thought Thee Auld Floozie would stay, and the filly has now proved it in style.

Thee Auld Floozie outfinished leading filly Saavoya to take out the Group Three Sunline Vase (2000m) at Ellerslie on Wednesday and her victory has earned her a crack at the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham in 10 days.

The filly is out of dual stakes winner Thee Auld Hussie and her owners include John and Sue Young, long-time clients of Marsh.

"I always thought she'd stay. John Young told me she wouldn't but he'll happily eat humble pie," Marsh said.

"Saavoya's a good horse but my filly's got to be a chance in the Oaks and 2400m won't worry her either."

Thee Auld Floozie found Saavoya too strong over the Auckland Cup carnival but she beat Oaks favourite Savaria at her previous start at New Plymouth and showed she had improved with her victory on Wednesday.

"I thought if we could run second to Saavoya we'd be right on track for the Oaks but we got the beautiful drop on her and she toughed it out right to the line. It was a good solid win," Marsh said.
