Fitness key for Java in G1 Orr: Schofield

Thursday 12 February 2015, 4:29pm

Chad Schofield is desperate to capitalise on Group One opportunities for global racing giant Godolphin, starting with the CF Orr Stakes.

Schofield will ride the improving three-year-old Java for Godolphin in the 1400-metre race at Caulfield on Saturday.

Trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, Java faces his biggest test when he steps up to weight-for-age but Schofield is banking on a fitness edge to make a difference.

Java earned his shot at the CF Orr with four-straight wins campaign including a last-start victory in the Group Three Manfred Stakes.

He is on the third line of betting behind Dissident and Sandown Guineas winner Petrology, who finished strongly for second to Java when resuming in the Manfred.

"He's a three-year-old against the older horses but what he's got on his side is race fitness," Schofield said.

"He's a winner, he's got a very good record for a young horse that hasn't had many starts and he's an on-pacer who tries his best every start.

"We've drawn a bit awkwardly (in barrier 13) but we'll work forward and race on the speed and he'll give his all."

Schofield will wear Godolphin's famous royal blue colours in four races on Saturday.

He has three rides for Godolphin's head trainer John O'Shea including in each Blue Diamond Prelude.

He will ride Antelucan in the fillies' division and talented Sampeah in the colts and geldings race.

"To be given so many opportunities by them (Godolphin) is great," Schofield said.

"It's one thing to be given the opportunities, it's another thing to make them count."

Meanwhile, Happy Trails kicks off his campaign in the Orr and while trainer Paul Beshara insists he's progressing well towards his main autumn targets, he will be happy to see the gelding hitting the line hard.
