Jumps season just around the corner

Sunday 8 February 2015, 3:10pm

Group One racing is about to start in 2015 which means the Victorian jumps season is also not far away.

The Darren Weir-trained Gotta Take Care, a million dollar earner and the reigning jumps champion of Australia, kicked off his campaign running last in a 1600m flat race at Sandown on Saturday.

On Monday at Cranbourne, Patrick Payne is taking a team of jumpers to trial on the flat before the first official jumps heats at that course on Friday.

Weir said he would take a small team to Cranbourne for the schooling session with Gotta Take Care among them.

The owners of Gotta Take Care had hoped to to contest next month's Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville but Weir poured cold water on that suggestion.

"He's only in work now because the owners were dreaming of running him in an Adelaide Cup, but that's not happening," Weir said.

"We'll just try and pick up a flat race if he can along the way and then go jumping."

Weir had initially considered Oakbank on Easter Monday for Gotta Take Care but with the gelding expected to get 73kg he has decided to wait until the Warrnambool carnival in May to kick off his jumping campaign.

He said the Galleywood Hurdle (2900m) on May 6 would be the most logical starting point.

"He'll go to those set-weight and penalties races and most likely kick off with the Galleywood at Warrnambool," Weir said.

"We'll just follow the normal path with him and run him in those sorts of races.

"The more work you can give him the better it is for him.

"He's very sound and a happy horse."

The Victorian jumps season kicks off at Ballarat on March 10.
