Pelicano out to add stakes win in Tasmania

Monday 2 February 2015, 1:55pm

Pelicano has already won Cups in three states and will be seeking to make it four in Tasmania.

Trainer Tony McEvoy has pinpointed the Group Three Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 9 and the Launceston Cup later in the month as ideal targets for the six-year-old.

The gelding won four Listed races in 2013 including the Murray Bridge Cup in South Australia, the Parramatta Cup in Sydney and the Werribee Cup in Victoria.

He spent a year on the sidelines because of a sesamoid injury and has had three starts since he returned in December.

McEvoy says he believes Pelicano can make an impact in Tasmania despite his disappointment with his last-start sixth in the Gosford Cup, beaten 1-3/4 lengths.

"I thought he would be well-suited so he'll go down for the Hobart and Launceston Cups," McEvoy said.

"His last start I thought was a little bit plain in the Gosford Cup.

"He was given a good ride and Hugh Bowman was really happy with him but he said he just didn't get around Gosford. When he had to quicken on the bend he just couldn't get around there and he stayed on OK to the line.

"He's trained on beautifully since so I'll trust that he's going well and we'll head to Hobart."

Matthew Neilson will take the ride.

The Hobart Cup has attracted 28 nominations with local star Geegees Blackflash the 59kg topweight alongside Warrnambool Cup winner Akzar who will be directed instead to Adelaide.

Pelicano has 58kg.

"He's sound and very well so I'm hopeful that he can find his form," McEvoy said.
