In the past few season there have been few, if any, more exciting sire prospects start enter their stud life than Wanted.Wanted retired from the track in 2010 after a successful career that landed him three 2nds in Gr.1 races before a victory in Australia's premier sprinting event the Gr.1 VRC Newmarket Handicap. In doing so he defeated the Champion Sprinter in Australia and Europe Starspangledbanner!
An $800,000 yearling, there was always high expectations around the most expensive son of Fastnet Rock ever sold of his time. He didn't let his supporters down winning on debut as a 2YO before claiming the Gr.3 Kindergarten Stakes, a traditional lead up to the Golden Slipper. Unfortunately in the richest race for 2YO's in the world, he struck a heavy track which nullified his devastating turn of foot and was only beaten a few lengths in the unsuitable conditions.
First start back as a 3YO, he was very unlucky to run into arguably the best sprinter of all time in Black Caviar, but still managed to run a magnificent 2nd and within a length of the champion mare (still the only horse to get within a length). Over his next few starts he was desperately unlucky not to claim a Gr.1 race, running within 1.5 lengths of the winners on three occasions.
After a short spell, he ran in four consecutive Gr.1 races for two 2nds and a 4th before claiming the $1m Newmarket Handicap. Wanted retired to stud with over $1.2m in prize money in the bank. In his two season career he finished in the first four in Gr.1 races on eight occasions.
Wanted is a son of one of the most exciting sires in the land in Fastnet Rock (whose service fee has now risen to $132,000). With just three crops of runners he is already the sire of seventeen stakes winners and four Gr.1 winners. In the 2011 edition of the Golden Slipper Fastnet Rock had no less than five runners head to the barrier, a remarkable feat. Wanted is one of four of his sons already retired to stud.
Out of a Snippets mare, like popular sire Not a Single Doubt, Wanted’s dam Fragmentation was a listed winner and group placed. Wanted is not the only son of Fragmentation to achieve racetrack success, his half-brother Shrapnel is already a Gr.2 and Gr.3 winner and his career is not yet complete.
Last season Wanted covered a limited book of seventy five mares in his first season at stud. Of these seventy five mares twenty seven were Gr.1 winners, daughters of Gr.1 winners, sisters of Gr.1 winners or sisters of Gr.1 producers. A further twenty one of the mares he covered was connected in one of the aforementioned ways to group level success.
In 2011 Wanted will once again serve a limited book of mares. His stunning athletic looks, high quality mares and restricted numbers mean that when his progeny reach the sales as yearlings they are likely to be in hot demand. Wanted offers commercial breeders a faultless option for their mares.
