The tough and attractive son of Belong to Me, Solo Flyer burst onto the racing scene winning his first start at Randwick as a 2yo over 1100m, trained by Anthony Cummings he was precocious enough to compete in the $1m Magic Millions 2yo race. He returned as an Autumn 2yo and was extremely competitive in races like the Gr 3 Skyline Stakes and Gr 2 Pago Pago Stakes, running 4th in both, then culminating in a very close second in the G1 Champagne Stakes - being beaten less than a length to Champion 2 year old of the season Meurice.
Resuming as a Spring 3yo, Solo Flyer placed third in the Gr 3 Rosebud Quality before finishing a close up second to German Chocolate at WFA in the Gr 2 Premier Stakes with Group 1 winners Fashions Afield, Mentality, Camarilla and Newport among the beaten division. He then placed behind El Cambio and Kingda Ka in the Gr 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes. With his pedigree, a Derby campaign was the obvious route to take though in hindsight he was just a touch to brilliant to stay the trip.
He returned in blistering fashion as an Autumn 4 year old, with a revised opinion of his ideal distance. Resuming in scintillating form winning his first 3 starts. He won at Randwick in Open Company, was then taken straight to the Gr 3 Newmarket Handicap at Newcastle smashing his rivals in Track and Race Record time, then 10 days later he lined up in the G2 Ajax (pictured) stakes sitting on a hot speed winning in outstanding fashion, beating Group 1 Winners All American and Reigning to Win.
Anthony Cummings Trainer of Solo Flyer says “it’s always easy to work when you’ve got pretty sharp tools and they don’t come much sharper than this guy.”
Bred by Gerry Harvey, Solo Flyer was purchased by Cummings for $180,000 at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearling sale. He is from Fly The Flag by Sir Tristram, a twice winning sister to Melbourne Cup hero Brew and the NZ Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1 placed Bubble. Fly The Flag’s half sisters, Stella Artois and Latte are also great producers. Stella Artois is the dam of the multiple Group 2 winner (My) Tusker, while Latte has produced the AJC Australian Derby (G1) winner Fiumicino . All 3 are daughters of the grand racemare Horlicks, who set a world record in her historic victory in the Japan Cup. That was one of 6 wins at Group 1 level for the daughter of Three Legs, who earned over $4 million in a stellar career.
While this is a family most noted for its staying ability, this is also the same dam line that produced the speed machine and successful sire General Nediym. Military Plume is also a successful stallion to come from this same family.
His sire Belong To Me, from the Danzig sire line has produced top line performers, Belong To Many, Bon Hoffa, the Oaks winner Bulla Borghese and Graeme Begg’s brilliant Miler, All Silent winner of the Emirates Stakes G1.
Solo Flyer will stand this season at the very attractive fee of $5,500 inc GST.
