Stud Comments
A Danehill line horse of genuine speed, in the last decade and a half this combination of factors has been the best pointer in forecasting a young stallion who is bound for commercial and racetrack success. Magnus is a prime example of such a horse, additionally he comes from a family that is fast becoming one of the countries best.An exceptionally quick racehorse Magnus ran in a generation when the sprint races in this country were truly a test of the best of the best. Even on debut in a maiden he faced and defeated eventual Gr.2 winner California Dane. Racing against the elite was a theme that would resonate throughout his career.
During the Spring Carnival of his 4yo season, Magnus raised the bar and became a Gr.2 winner when he won the now, Gr.1 Age (Patinack) Classic down the straight at Flemington. In 2010 this race would be won by his close relation Black Caviar.
In his next three starts he would run in the top four in some of best sprints in Australia including the VRC Lightning and the VRC Newmarket. On both these occasions the race was won by Champion Miss Andretti, highlighting the quality of the fields he faced.
At his fourth start in the preparation Magnus's trainer Peter Moody travelled him to Sydney for the time honored All-Aged stakes previously won by his sire Flying Spur. Magnus ran and won, earning himself a justified Gr.1 win.
Over the remainder of his career he would race nationally and internationally with great consistency. He would go on to run in the top four, six times at the elite level. On five of these occasions the race was won by Weekend Hussler, Apache Cat or Miss Andretti - all crowned Champions. Included in these runs were placing in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot and in Singapore's Krisflyer.
His racetrack success was probably ordained at birth in retrospect. A son of Champion Sire Flying Spur, the sire of 83 stakes winners, Magnus is out of a family getting better with every generation and as already mentioned responsible for the world's best racehorse Black Caviar.
His dam Scandinavia was good enough to win a Gr.2 and place in four Gr.1's. The daughter of Snippets went on to produce not only Magnus, but Gr.2 winning sprinter Wilander. She is also responsible for Helsinge, who of course is the dam of Black Caviar and her little brother Moshe. The first of Snippet's sons to head to stud, Snitzel, has got himself off to a great start and it looks like only better things are to come.
Magnus' first crop of yearlings went through the sales ring in 2011 and caught the eye of many of the top judges. Selling up to $170,000 they are now located in the stables of many of the countries best trainers. To name just a few Peter Moody, Lee Freedman, Gai Waterhouse, Aquanita, Robbie Griffiths, Anthony Cummings, Ellerton/Zahra, Jason Warren and Rick Hore-Lacy will all be training Magnus' progeny.
Without the Danehill line speed it would be fair to say Magnus would be an attractive option for broodmare owners but in this case, the icing on the cake has been the truest indicator of all.
