This is the first foal out of a well performed NZ mare "Malissimo" by Howbadduwantit, winner of 6 races. He is by Montjeu Stallion Nom du Jeu and was acquired by KRD Racing in NZ as a yearling. "Denominator" or Norm as he is known, has had a great start to his racing life.
Broken in by leading NZ Horseman Sam Beatson, the young gelding then went into the care of Shaune Ritchie - Champion NZ Trainer. The horse has shown a lot of ability on the track, both Shaune and the track riders felt that he was a serious "Derby" horse, with a great turn of foot. The decision was then made to bring him to Australia as the weather and track conditions at the time were just horrible in NZ.
On arriving in Australia, he didn't react well to the travel and change of climate and subsequently we tipped him out after his first start. Coming back into his current preparation he has shown in his track work that he has the wood on some seriously talented and proven horses, however he is just not translating this to race day performances.
Whilst in NZ recently I caught up with Murray Baker and Shaune Ritchie and we had a lengthy discussion about where to from here, as he has only had 4 starts and has plenty left in him. Murray trained Nom du Jeu and has a number of them in training in NZ along with Shaune and the consensus is they need more time. The breed is only just starting to show results now which supports what Murray is saying. On the back of this we have tipped him out with the view that he come back later this year to be primed for his 4YO season. With this particular horse, it is also a case of the penny not yet dropping.
It is solely for this reason that I have made the call "reluctantly" to move him on, as we have invested enough in him to date that I am not prepared to wait another 6 months. The horse is sound and has never had any injuries or concerns with soundness. He will be what I consider a special project for the right person/trainer and a horse who will win races and turn the corner. He has a lovely kind eye and gentle nature and there are no problems in handling him or his overall temprament.
His overall conformance is very good, just slightly back in one knee would be the only thing physically you could fault him on, but this has no bearing on his ability to handle the rigors of track work/racing.
